Interchangeable Knitting Needles — Why They're Worth It and How to Choose a Set

Interchangeable Knitting Needles — Why They're Worth It and How to Choose a Set

What Are Interchangeable Needles

Interchangeable knitting needles are a modular system — a set of tips in various sizes plus cables in various lengths. The tips are screwed or clicked onto the cable to create a circular needle of exactly the size and length you need. One set covers everything you would otherwise need 15–20 separate circular needles for.

How They Work

A set typically includes tips in sizes 3.5–8 mm (or 3–15 mm for complete sets) and cables in lengths of 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 cm. Tips are attached to the cable either with a thread (screw system) or a locking mechanism (click system). Need to knit a hat on 5 mm needles with a 40 cm cable? Just screw it on. A sweater on 5.5 mm with a 100 cm cable? Swap the tips and cable.

Popular Brands

Brand Material System Price Range

KnitPro (Knitter's Pride) Wood, metal, acrylic Screw 1,500–3,500 CZK
addi Click Metal + olive wood Click (lock) 3,000–6,000 CZK

Lykke Birch Screw 2,500–4,000 CZK

What to Focus on When Choosing

Tip material — metal (smooth, yarn glides easily, faster knitting), wood/bamboo (warm feel, yarn grips more, gentler on joints). Try both — it's a matter of personal preference.

Cable quality — the cable must be flexible and have no memory (it shouldn't curl). The ChiaoGoo red cable is considered the best. A stiff, twisting cable will ruin your knitting experience.

Tip-to-cable join — it must be smooth, with no edge. Yarn must not "snag" when transitioning from the tip to the cable. Quality brands have a seamless join.

Size range — a basic set covers 3.5–8 mm. For socks you'll need smaller sizes (2–3.5 mm), for bulky yarn larger ones (9–15 mm) — these are purchased separately.

Why Interchangeable Needles Are Worth It

A circular needle costs 200–400 CZK. If you knit regularly, you'll need 10–15 size/length combinations = 2,000–6,000 CZK. An interchangeable set for 2,500–4,000 CZK covers all combinations. Plus you save space — one case instead of a pile of needles.

Tip

Before buying a full set, purchase a single pair of tips and a cable in your most commonly used size (a trial / try-it set). Most brands offer this. Test the join, the material, and the comfort — and then invest in the full set.
