Merino Yarn — Properties, Superwash and How to Work With It

Merino Yarn — Properties, Superwash and How to Work With It

What is merino wool

Merino wool comes from the merino breed of sheep — originally from Spain, today raised primarily in Australia, New Zealand and South America. Merino fiber is finer than regular sheep's wool (typically 17–24 microns vs. 25–40 microns for common breeds), making it exceptionally soft and comfortable directly against the skin.

Properties of merino wool

Fineness and softness — merino doesn't scratch. Most people who "can't stand wool" have no problem with merino. The lower the micron count, the finer the fiber (ultrafine merino: under 17 microns).

Thermoregulation — merino regulates body temperature — it keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. The fibers absorb moisture (up to 30% of their own weight) without feeling wet.

Elasticity — merino has natural memory — it returns to its original shape after being stretched. Ideal for fitted garments.

Naturally antibacterial — merino repels odors thanks to the structure of the fiber. You can wear a merino sweater for several days without washing.

Superwash vs. classic merino

Property Superwash Classic (non-superwash)
Washing Machine wash, gentle cycle Hand wash only
Felting Does not felt Felts (be careful!)
Surface Smoother, shinier More natural, slightly fuzzy
Elasticity Lower (stretches out) Higher (better memory)
Ecology Chemically treated Natural
Price Slightly higher Standard

Superwash merino undergoes a chemical process that removes or coats the scales on the surface of the fiber — this prevents the fibers from interlocking and the wool from felting. The downside: superwash merino has less elasticity and may stretch out over time.

Suitable projects

Sweaters and cardigans — merino is the first choice for garments worn next to the skin. Soft, warm and comfortable.

Children's clothing — the softness of merino is safe even for sensitive children's skin. Superwash for easy washing.

Scarves and hats — a luxurious feel with excellent thermoregulation.

Socks — merino sock yarn (with nylon for durability) is the gold standard for hand-knitted socks.

Care

Superwash: Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle. Do not use a dryer — even superwash can become misshapen in the heat.

Classic: Hand wash in lukewarm water with a gentle detergent. Do not wring; dry flat. Changes in water temperature cause felting — rinse with water the same temperature as you used for washing.
