What is a Knitting Machine
A knitting machine is a mechanical or electronic device that automates the knitting process. Unlike hand knitting with needles, where each stitch is created individually, a knitting machine creates an entire row of stitches at once — either by turning a crank (mechanical) or by sliding a carriage across a needle bed (flat machines). The result is work that is many times faster with even, consistent stitches.
Types of Knitting Machines
Circular Knitting Machines
Needles arranged in a circle, yarn is fed from above, and the result is a tube. You turn a crank. Suitable for hats, cowls, and socks. Home versions include the Sentro and Addi Express. Industrial versions have hundreds of needles and computer control.
Flat Knitting Machines (Flatbed)
Needles arranged in a row on a horizontal needle bed. A carriage slides from left to right across the needles, creating a row of stitches. They knit flat pieces — sweater panels, scarves, blankets. They allow for more complex patterns than circular machines.
Single bed — one needle bed. Knits stockinette stitch and simple patterns.
Double bed — two needle beds facing each other. Knits ribbing, double-sided patterns, and double-knit fabrics.
Punch Card Machines
Flat machines with mechanical pattern control using punch cards. The card advances row by row and the holes in the card determine which needles are active. They allow for fair isle, tuck stitch, and slip stitch patterns. Popular vintage machines include the Brother KH-860 and Silver Reed SK280.
Electronic Machines
Flat machines with computer control. A pattern is uploaded from a computer and the machine automatically selects needles. Unlimited pattern size (unlike the 24–40 stitches of punch card machines). Machines include the Brother KH-970 and Silver Reed SK840 with DesignaKnit software.
How to Choose a Machine
| Need | Machine Type | Price Range |
|---|---|---|
| Trying out machine knitting | Sentro / plastic circular | 500–1,500 CZK |
| Quality hats and cowls | Addi Express | 3,000–5,000 CZK |
| Sweaters and more complex projects | Flat single bed | 5,000–30,000 CZK |
| Patterned knits | Punch card / electronic | 10,000–80,000 CZK |
| Professional production | Industrial | 100,000+ CZK |
Machine Knitting vs. Hand Knitting
Speed — a machine is 5–20× faster. A hat in 10 minutes instead of 3 hours.
Evenness — a machine creates perfectly uniform stitches. Hand knitting has "character" — subtle irregularities.
Patterns — hand knitting is more flexible — cables, lace, 3D textures. A machine is limited by needle mechanics.
Portability — needles go anywhere with you. A flat machine weighs 10+ kg and takes up an entire table.
Experience — hand knitting is meditative and relaxing. Machine knitting is more technical and production-oriented.
